The Year 1954 on Dipity.

Dear Diary,

I thought maybe I should write to you one last time before I go to Jessica’s house for her parent’s New Years Party!! 1955…. here I come! Next year I’ll be a big 8th grader on campus!

It was an interesting year for sure! Daddy finally got one of those colored t.vs everyone was talking about last year. We got to watch the Rose Bowl for the first time with all its’ bright colors. It was really neat. I don’t think it can get much better than that!

So you already knew I made the track team. I ran record times for the county this year and even made it to states! Definitely not as fast as that Roger Bannister guy!!! Can you believe 3 minutes and 58 seconds??!!! That’s just crazy! I doubt I’ll ever get that close.

I didn’t do much over the summer, except going to the lake with Susie almost everyday. Oh but I did read a really good book that just came out. I’m sure my Mrs. Snyder would never let us read it in class since it’s pretty different than boring ol’ Shakespeare! The Fellowship of the Ring kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I finished the book in less than 2 weeks! Nuts right? You know, I bet it’d be really cool to make that into a movie. I doubt it will ever become THAT popular though….

So back in Spring, a decision was made in the courts to move kids around in the schools so that blacks and whites will be together. A lot of my friend’s parents were really upset, even my grandpa was upset. I don’t really understand why. I get to go to school with people from different schools, including Gabrielle! We met when we were in elementary school. She used to come up to our neighborhood playground because her dad worked around the corner in town.
And now we can finally go to school together! My parents tell me I’m too young to understand…and maybe I am, but I know I’m tired of all these hatefulness.

A little after school started, right around my brother’s birthday, Hurricane Hazel came to town. It was absolutely horrible! The winds were gusting like crazy for several days. My friend Molly’s grandmother actually had a close friend die from the flooding down in Florida.

Well….that’s all for now! Talk to you next year!!!!!

Your best and only friend,
Amanda

P.S. I forgot to add that I heard this song recently from a new singer named Elvis. I’m thinking he may just be a one hit wonder though....
